Coop Opportunities

The following is an outline of many unique and exciting opportunities that SLSS coop students may apply to take part in.

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) - SLSS has a unique learning opportunity for students interested in Hospitality and Tourism. Students in this program need two coop credits at a related placement. Click here for more information on this program.

French Immersion Cooperative Education - this cooperative education program places French Immersion students in a workplace where they will converse in French while gaining practical work experience. All assignments and presentations will be completed in French. Students will earn two French Immersion credits that are tied to a French course that they have previously completed.

Big Brothers & Big Sisters - through a partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, coop students who participate in this program are placed at a neighbouring elementary school to mentor individual students one-to-one. An application and interview process is required. For more information on this program contact a coop teacher or go to bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/cornwall

RCMP Coop - students will have the opportunity to apply for a position with the RCMP of Cornwall. Coop possibilities include work in either the Federal Investigation field or the Youth and Community Involvement field. FIS students would deal with different files and work on projects alongside the R.C.M.P. The Youth and Community Involvement students would work with the co-op coordinator to create crime, drug and alcohol prevention programs for the community. Students will take part in a highly competitive interview process with the RCMP. Students must also be enrolled in full day coop to be eligible for this program.

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a combination of cooperative education and apprenticeship that allows students to learn a skilled trade while at the same time, completing the requirements of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students are eligible if they have completed 16 credits and are 16 years of age or older. Hours worked can be counted towards apprenticeship hours if a student pursues a future in the skilled trade.

Automotive Service Technician: Level 1 Apprenticeship Program (AST) is a partnership between the Upper Canada District School Board, St. Lawrence College and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. This program is being offered to Grade 12 students interested in pursuing a career as an automotive service technician. The selected students will begin their Level 1 apprenticeship training at St. Lawrence College. After 3 weeks, students will start a work/college rotation to complete the hours needed for their level 1 course, while gaining practical work experience at their placement. The students will be registered as apprentices with the Ministry.

* The Upper Canada District School Board and St. Lawrence College continue to expand the Level 1 apprenticeship programs that are available to students. Contact your guidance counsellor or Cooperative Education teacher for apprenticeship programs available in other trade areas.
